Dear Parents/Guardians,
As we approach the end of our unit on multiplication and division it is an opportunity to review the learning that has taken place and reinforce some of the key concepts covered. Each individual student has experienced a number of different methods for carrying out a calculation over the first two units using one of the four operations. Below I have placed some links to small clips explaining some of the methods we have used. This is a great opportunity for you to spend time with your child looking and discussing how they went about solving some of the problems in class.
Grid/Box method multiplication
Short division with remainders
Looking ahead to ‘What is next?’ We will be covering statistics specifically looking at solving comparison sum and difference problems using information presented in a line graph along with the interpretation of information in tables. I have put two examples below so you understand the style of questions the students will be working through.
The line graph above shows the temperatures in New York over 6 days. What was the temperature difference between the warmest and coldest day? What was the average temperature over the 6 days?
Sarah bought a new car in 2013 for $24,000. The dollar value of her car changed each year as shown in the table below.
| Value of Sarah's Car | |
| Year | Value |
| 2013 | $24,000 |
| 2014 | $22,500 |
| 2015 | $19,700 |
| 2016 | $17,500 |
| 2017 | $14,500 |
| 2018 | $10,000 |
| 2019 | $ 5,800 |
What is the difference in the value of the car from 2013 to 2019? What amount did the car depreciate by each year?
