Welcome to World Earth Day Year 5
Your working day will be different today as we celebrate World Earth Day. We have some planned activities for you (see below) that we hope make you aware of the environment and how we can work together to protect it.
What is World Earth Day?
Earth Day is an annual event celebrated each year on April 22nd. By celebrating the day we demonstrate support for environmental protection. It also raises awareness of the negative impact our actions have on the environment and Earth as a whole.
Developing a better understanding
Watch the video below to gain an understanding of the 'why' and 'how' of Earth Day. They will show you the importance of this day, and how you can make a difference EVERYDAY.
Some of the activities will be ongoing so please don’t think you have to finish them today.
We really look forward to seeing pictures of your World Earth Day creations.
Design It and Build It!
We create so much recyclable material in a lifetime we need to think about what we do with it and are we doing something that will help the environment. This activity is a fun way to make you aware of what your family produces in the way of recycled materials and use them in a creative way.
Instructions
Collect as many recyclable objects as you can that are varying shapes and sizes e.g: tissue, shoe, cereal boxes, plastic bottles, pringle cylinders etc.
Lay out all the objects you have collected and look at what you have. This will help you decide the type of object/thing you can make.
Welcome to Earth Day English. This is the perfect opportunity to learn more about this beautiful planet and how we can take care of it. To make Earth day even more special why not get writing for this brilliant day. To help inspire you, choose 2 of the activities from the examples below:
* Finish
this sentence in at least 4 different ways: The Earth needs our help because…
* Write a
haiku poem about saving Earth. Remember haikus have three lines with the following syllable pattern for each
line 5, 7 and 5.
* Create a
poster for Earth day and include a snappy slogan that will encourage more
people to protect Earth.
* Write a
step-by-step guide on how to use less water in your home.
* If you
could speak to trees, what do you think they would say? Imagine if you asked
them the question, “How can I save Earth?”. What would they reply?
* Create your own comic strip which
tells the tale of a team of superheroes whose job is to protect planet Earth.
What would you call your superhero team? Would they have any special powers?
Who would their enemies be?

ART/DESIGN TECHNOLOGY
To celebrate in Earth Week this week, your task is to design a sculpture out of recycled materials, however, your sculpture must be about helping to improve the Earth's Oceans and it's animals. Plastic is a horrible material that keeps finding its ways into our oceans and it causes a lot of damage. This week, we want you to recycle plastic and make a sculpture of it and also write a paragraph about how harmful it is.
You might focus on helping the Green Sea Turtle, make one of of recycled plastic and your paragraph could be about how harmful plastic is to turtles. Our goal is that when people in the community see your sculpture and read about the effects that plastic has on our environment, it might educate others and get them to recycle more.
Watch the clip below and go through the PowerPoint which is added at your own speed. We can't wait to see the amazing sculptures when they're completed.
