The Term Ahead
Our focus will shift from Natural Disasters to Ancient China. To help develop a better understanding of our topic it would be great if all our students could spend some time over the upcoming holiday doing some research of their own.
China’s history stretches back several centuries with many different dynasties ruling over the vast country. We would like you to create a timeline of dynasties for China recording down the very first to the last. Find out the name of the ruling family, how long their reign lasted and the ruling emperors name and age. Remember you have already created a timeline of volcanoes in our natural disaster unit. If you are enjoying your research perhaps you could take a deeper look into one of the dynasties that you are interested in.
Maths
One of the biggest areas we need to work on in Year 5 is our times tables. Quick fire recall of facts up to the 12 times tables benefits all areas of mathematics. Perhaps have a competition with your parents each night to see who is the quickest!
With a focus on problem solving over the second half of the term take some time to see if you can complete some of the puzzles below.
1. Exactly how many minutes is it before seven o'clock, if 40 minutes ago it was three times as many minutes past two o'clock?
2. What is missing in this sequence:
8 10 14 18 ==?== 34 50 66
3. If cat and a half can catch a mouse and a half in a day and a half how many mice can 3 cats catch in 3 days?
4. Below is 99, moving only two lines, can you turn this into 25?
5. What value of * makes the following correct:
Reading
Please keep the nightly reading up spending at least 20 minutes reading a book that you really enjoy. Your teachers would love to hear about your main characters adventure when you come back after the holidays.
