Year 5 Spelling
We are now up and running on our full English programme and we wanted to give you some background information on spelling and how it runs within Year 5. In the past your child may have received a weekly list of words to take home and learn before they were tested on a Friday. Our approach differs somewhat as each child receives an individual set of words depending on their ability which they will use in a range of different spelling tasks throughout the week in class. We will not send home a list to learn unless we have identified a specific need for the individual child. Each child will work through 3 sets of words for the week: firstly a spelling rule, secondly topic based words and finally words that are part of the essential Y5/6 spelling list from the national curriculum forming 10 words overall. You may ask how can I support my child? The answer to that is by looking over the topic words or essential words that are on the list and having a discussion about their meaning with your child. Although these words may not be part of their weekly spelling having some insight into their meaning will help in many areas of our topic. I have included the week 1 spelling words and rules below and will continue to do so on a weekly basis.
